TwitterHit prides itself on showing you only unique hits (meaning not the same person over and over) when searching for people to follow while also removing spammers fro the results. They have both a free and paid service.
The free server allows you to add up to 100 people a day to follow. Then if you do not get followed back, they have a removal tool. So it is beginning to sounds like a tool just to build your follower count, not to find value.
But as usual, I logged in. It uses oAuth which I liked immediately. You could add by town name or other search term you decided. It was locked at 5 searches of 20 people each (hence the 100 people limit above) unless you upgrade.
I was able to see the avatar and click a bio button for each result returned in my search. I could also check all and immediately follow them. I could have subscribed to add up to 200 people to follow. I really don’t want that however, I want them to find me.
Note that it will also send a wonderful announcement to everyone that you are using the service, how many people you added and to go use their service. Apparently this is not optional and I did not like that. Sample:
There was a decent help area and the site is Google ad supported outside of the subscription model. So maybe you will find some new people to follow.
