Twilk – your friend’s faces on your Twitter background

Twilk is a service that allows you to creatively use your followers avatars. In fact, Twilk will make a Twitter background using the avatars of your followers. Simply sign-in to allow Twilk to grab your follower avatars and click “use background” once Twilk is done. A preview of the avatars will be displayed beforehand. The background will also feature a Twilk ad, which you have to pay to remove.

Choose between the people you follow and the people that follow you, or a 2 column and even black and white only background.  There are numerous choices.  To change the background you must revisit the site, it does not update automatically as you change who you follow or as new people follow you.

I was about to ask how placement is done for the background and they had the answer right there on the main page!

How are people arranged on the background?

People are sorted by how much you mention their user name ( @ replies, retweets, etc ) in your Twitter feed. It goes from top to bottom starting in the first two columns on the left. If you mention people the same amount (or not at all), the order of those people will be random.

Twitlay – Twitter background creator

We have highlighted numerous Twitter background tools (see the Profile Customization category), Twitlay follows right along allowing you to upload an image, add text and instantly make it your background.

Of course, they will also design a custom background for $50, but you are after the free ones first.  Categories run down the right, but you haw to fight your way through the ads to find much of anything, including the background creator at the bottom.  Which is really a Google ad that blends in.

If they streamlined the ad placement and cleaned up the busy UI, it would be another place to point you for backgrounds.

Twitrounds – free backgrounds for your Twitter page

Twitrounds is a large collection of free backgrounds.  You can use their installer for automatic changes to your background or download the image and do it manually.

Each background shows the statistics of the number of views and ratings.  When utilizing the automatic updating, you can choose whether or not to automatically follow Twitrounds as well as when it was added to the collection.

Lastly for the manual installers, they give you all the color settings you need with the download of the background itself.  If these all remain free and the site ad driven, it will be a great resource.  I didn’t see a count of the total number they have available, but it looked like a decent selection.

Update from the site founder!

Some other extra information in case you were interested:

  • A little over 300 free backgrounds and we add between 5-10 backgrounds a day
  • We are about to launch a Custom Twitter Background section for $79 per background
  • Auto-Install tool that makes it super easy to install backgrounds
  • We do take requests for community backgrounds if people follow us and tweet @ us

ClickableNow – add clickable links to your background

Clickablenow has one catch, everyone needs to run this as a Firefox/IE/Flock  extension to get the benefit from the ability.  Once installed, the backgrounds of Twitter become a playground.  Any image you wish to make a clickable hotspot is possible.

They use oAuth for authentication and once logged in, your Twitter background is brought in to work with.  You simply drag and drop links into your background.  Unless they have the extension, there is no difference.  With the extension, you can make anything a clickable area!  A great way to finally share links of the information you place in your background.

They make a point to tell you the bigger screen resolution the better so you can see more background area.  It makes perfect sense as the tiny screens block most of what you would want to show and link anyway.

Stats showed this as an experimental add-on with just under 2,000 downloads at the time of writing.  So test it out and let us know your thoughts!

Tweetbacks – (yes another one) Twitter backgrounds

Tweetbacks (we did the same name earlier today, entirely different product) is a gallery of Twitter backgrounds for you to download and utilize.  You can also upload backgrounds if you have done something amazing, or even if it isn’t.

There was some cool ones to see and the site is ad driven on the right.   Each background can have a rating, but since the site is new many didn’t have them yet.  There is a link for the free customizable ones, but it was very limited in depth compared to the others we have (see the Profile Customization Tools category).

They do have a RSS feed to subscribe when new backgrounds are loaded into the site to keep you up to date also.

Twitpaper offers a large amount of cool themes and backgrounds.  They provide a step-by-step screenshot tutorial on how to use the custom backgrounds so anyone can take advantage of it.

On other tabs they have some slick buttons to use on your blogs/webpages.  Overall this is a place to stop for free stuff!

TweetPlate – awesome Twitter backgrounds, many free

Tweetplate offers some amazing custom backgrounds for your Twitter profile page.  Do not use mine as an example as I created my won from scratch.

The owner of the site (and developer) got some heat over having too many girlie backgrounds and made a section of manly ones.  Tons are free, so go grab one and make your page look better already! I found a new one to work with right away.  Make sure you leave her some form of credit on the background, it is only fair.

You can even add her RSS feed to know when new ones come out

Peekr – view Twitter backgrounds with ease!

Peekr is an awesome little tool.  How many times have you been on someones profile page on Twitter that they spent hours of time on and you can’t see it all?  Well with the bookmarklet of Peekr it hides the normal Twitter stuff showing only the background.  They have a sample on their page to give you the idea.

When you are done, simply click the unhide button that appeared or refresh the webpage itself!
