TweetCaster – the upgrade rocks across mobile clients

We first mentioned TweetCaster back in 2009 when it was just a BlackBerry app for Twitter. Since then they have gone multi-platform opening the doors to iPad, iPod, TweetCaster logoWindows Mobile , Bada, Android and still BlackBerry.

The new interface is quite impressive in the three different operating systems I tested on. Sporting millions of downloads, they have an impressive list of features:

  • All the basic Twitter functions
  • Zip It- hide unwanted tweets without unfollowing people
  • Send to Instapaper
  • Color coding
  • Nearby searches
  • Multiple themes and fonts
  • Info rich timeline
  • you can read the full list here

The client is free with banner ads or you can upgrade to the Pro version for $4.99.  I did not find the ads very intrusive on the iPad, so give the free version a shot first.

Psst, they also now make FriendCaster which is Facebook for iPad and a few other cool apps.

Twittelator Neue: A Beautiful New Twitter App for iPhone

Twittelator Neue is one of the latest Twitter clients for the iPhone and iPod Touch to hit the App Store. It’s absolutely a beautiful Twitter client to look at, but lacks many features to make switch from what we’re currently using.

Twittelator Neue

What makes this mobile Twitter app really stand out is it’s inline image and website embeds. When someone tweets a picture, a cropped preview of the image will appear just beneath the tweet. This cropped image theme also extends to profiles. It’s a very nice visual effect. When selecting a tweet that has a link attached, Twitterlator Neue will load the link just beneath the tweet, which we find to be very convenient.

Twitterlator Neue is full of nice animations, gestures, and menu overlays when creating a new tweet or deleting old messages. However, it doesn’t automatically refresh Mentions or doesn’t seem to really delete Direct Messages though it gives you the option to. You also cannot add anyone to a Twitter list from their profile. You have to go into your Twitter list and select “edit” to access the “add user to list” option. We prefer to add on the fly. At the time of writing this post,  there was no integration with iOS 5 either.

While Twittelator Neue is beautiful and brings great new features to the table , we’ll be waiting for another update or two before we switch this app. Though if you don’t mind it’s currently available for $1.99.

ShoutOut – speech to text tweeting for the iPhone

ShoutOut is a nifty (free) application for your iPhone/iPod that allows you to talk your way through tweeting, Facebook updates and texting.

What was unique about the updating was the rolling list of words as it guessed what you were saying, and allowed you to delete and select words with your finger quickly.  You can also shake the device to clear the new message and start over.  Simple, intuitive and free.  It shows when it is listening and you can see the words it is selecting to send as you talk.

Note, if you click the link it will attempt to launch iTunes.  Just hit cancel and you can view the webpage if desired.  There are also more screenshots available to see the user interface.

Twitter App: Upload Twitter Photos To Flickr Using Tweetie 2

Are you tired of waiting for developers and Apple  to update twitter clients for photos with better photo services? Ever wanted the option to upload photos to your Flickr account instead of Twitpic? You’d probably want to tweet them to. And you can, if you’re using Tweetie 2.

Nclude, the agency that redesigned Mashable, VentureBeat and Ogilvy PR web sites, developed a solution and it’s called Godzilla! This twitter client for photos let’s you upload photos to flickr from Tweetie 2. It’s really simple:

  • Go to Godzilla
  • Allow Godzilla access to your Twitter and Flickr account
  • Add  your unique url into Tweetie 2 settings  as  an “image service API endpoint.
  • Go try this Twitter client for photos right now.

Stop waiting on developers and Apple. Start uploading your photos to Flickr instead of the alternatives using Tweetie 2. Serious photographers needed.

Birdfeed – a clean iPhone client with Flickr support

Birdfeed has been out for a bit and we waited for version 1.2 to do a review and let them work the kinks out.  Well, they not only worked out some kinks but added geolocation and Flickr support.

While this app is $2.99 in the AppStore, it packs some features and also is supported by Boxcar that we highlighted earlier.

  • Direct messages – they flow and appear like conversations.
  • Local caching – get stuck with no signal from AT&T? Birdfeed maintains a small cache locally to catch you up when you get back online.
  • Unread counts in the right places
  • A timestamp indicator to show where you left off reading tweets.  All we can say is whew! About time!
  • Multiple account support
  • your choice of photo service
  • Save posted links for later with Instapaper
  • see the site for more..

This is a great iPhone app and was fun to play with.  I would read the site FAQ for a ton of other tricks and how-to steps for such things as trends.

Boxcar – iPhone push notifications including Facebook

Boxcar is our top rated, paid iPhone app that reads your Twitter stream (after authenticating with oAuth) looking for direct messages and @ replies.  It then pushes them to your device when found.  The downside of the service is that the application itself does not tweet, it launches whatever Twitter client you have installed also.  You get to choose between Tweetie, Twittelator, Twitterfon, Birdfeed, Twitterena, Twitterific and even Hahlo.

You get one service included in the purchase of the application, and adding on Facebook, Twitter searches and even email is $.99 per service.  So they definitely have a monetization plan involved.

Their stats on the page show they have pushed out almost ~13 million notifications, hopefully showing they are a stable and reliable service.
