TweetCaster – the upgrade rocks across mobile clients

We first mentioned TweetCaster back in 2009 when it was just a BlackBerry app for Twitter. Since then they have gone multi-platform opening the doors to iPad, iPod, TweetCaster logoWindows Mobile , Bada, Android and still BlackBerry.

The new interface is quite impressive in the three different operating systems I tested on. Sporting millions of downloads, they have an impressive list of features:

  • All the basic Twitter functions
  • Zip It- hide unwanted tweets without unfollowing people
  • Send to Instapaper
  • Color coding
  • Nearby searches
  • Multiple themes and fonts
  • Info rich timeline
  • you can read the full list here

The client is free with banner ads or you can upgrade to the Pro version for $4.99.  I did not find the ads very intrusive on the iPad, so give the free version a shot first.

Psst, they also now make FriendCaster which is Facebook for iPad and a few other cool apps.

Twittelator Neue: A Beautiful New Twitter App for iPhone

Twittelator Neue is one of the latest Twitter clients for the iPhone and iPod Touch to hit the App Store. It’s absolutely a beautiful Twitter client to look at, but lacks many features to make switch from what we’re currently using.

Twittelator Neue

What makes this mobile Twitter app really stand out is it’s inline image and website embeds. When someone tweets a picture, a cropped preview of the image will appear just beneath the tweet. This cropped image theme also extends to profiles. It’s a very nice visual effect. When selecting a tweet that has a link attached, Twitterlator Neue will load the link just beneath the tweet, which we find to be very convenient.

Twitterlator Neue is full of nice animations, gestures, and menu overlays when creating a new tweet or deleting old messages. However, it doesn’t automatically refresh Mentions or doesn’t seem to really delete Direct Messages though it gives you the option to. You also cannot add anyone to a Twitter list from their profile. You have to go into your Twitter list and select “edit” to access the “add user to list” option. We prefer to add on the fly. At the time of writing this post,  there was no integration with iOS 5 either.

While Twittelator Neue is beautiful and brings great new features to the table , we’ll be waiting for another update or two before we switch this app. Though if you don’t mind it’s currently available for $1.99.

MetroTwit: A Worthy Twitter Desktop Client for Windows (PC)

If you’re looking for that perfect Twitter desktop client for PC, MetroTwit is one you should consider.  Giving you gorgeous column user interface packed with power Twitter users features makes MetroTwit stand out in the crowd.

MetroTwit features a bundle of customizable notifications  with “toaster”, at-a-glance notifications in MetroTwit. If you’re using Windows 7 you can also opt-in to the message counter with Windows 7 taskbar integration. Adding your favorite Twitter list or stream of just one person as a MetroTwit column is as easy as selecting the pin icon when viewing a stream. Each additional column will be automatically resized to make room for the new colum.

After adding about 7 columns, a horizontal scrollbar appeared (results may vary based on your screen size). Once this happened columns stopped resizing automatically and I could still resize any column I wanted to create more space for better visibility. I’ve added 11 columns in MetroTwit with no problems.

When scrolling through messages, MetroTwit ditches the refresh button and instantly begins to pull up more tweets as you scroll further down the column. Not to mention MetroTweet offers auto-completion of usernames and hashtags! We definitely recommend trying this Twitter client out on your PC.  It’s truly a great Twitter desktop client.

Tweetgo Twitter Mobile Web Client for Nokia Maemo Gadgets (N900, N8)

Spotted on MyNokiaBlog.com, Tweetgo is a mobile web client for Twitter designed with Nokia Maemo devices in mind (i.e. Nokia N900). If you’ve ever owned a Nokiaa N900, then you’re aware of the lack of great Twitter clients for the Maemo platform. Tweetgo aims to be the solution using your mobile web browser.

Simply visit in http://www.tweetgo.net/ your mobile web browser to access your Twitter account  coupled with a great user interface. Tweetgo works in both landscape and portrait mode and includes quick access to most Twitter features including your lists. Things like your Favorites might require a little digging.

MyNokiaBlog has some great screencaps and a video of Tweetgo.net running on a Nokia N8. Give it a whirl in your browser if you’re using any of the Nokia Maemo devices.

SpokenTwitter – speak your tweets

SpokenTwitter allows you to record a message that is tweeted out as a link so people hear your voice.  You can reply, retweet and more with their menus and they provide local access numbers across numerous countries.

Features: (via any phone)

  • Post spoken tweets to Twitter
  • Unlimited recording length
  • NO 140 character restriction
  • Voice tweet in local language
  • Followers, hear real voice
  • Tweet while mobile / offline
  • Local access numbers
  • Listen to Twitter text timeline
  • Audio playback of voice tweets
  • @Replies to tweets

The only way I see this being monetized is commercials and advertisers inserted at some point in the process of usage and growth  They have to store all of these audio tweets for retrieval and playback.  As well as index and make instantly available.

tDash – a clean web client focusing on productivity

tDash was sent to us to check out, so we did as expected.  Dug in to give you the review.  For starters, they use oAuth for login and promise a clean, simple interface.  URLs are automagically shortened and you can also share pictures.  I was curious how the interface would look.  The left side broke down to:

  • Lists
  • Folders
  • Trends
  • Friends

You can view a screenshot of the dashboard right here.  Some alternate abilities were in the toolbar at the top including reordering how tweets showed and advanced tools like direct messaging.  An unread count next to each friend name was also available to see how much they have tweeted recently.  I am not sure how far back it goes or how it keeps track.  Each users is treated as a folder, and you can mark a folder as read.

Selecting a folder also gives you info on the person and their avatar.  Sharing a picture brought a pop-up window allowing you to browse to your local computer and place some description.  Allowing me to grab URLs of pictures on the web would be cool too.  The very bottom (scroll if you have lots of friends) shows the API usage and what tweets it is pulling in.

Ok, in summary then.  A clean interface yes.  Some unique features with the folder idea and read/unread.  A killer web based client? No.  A useful one in a pinch, yes.  I know they are in early stages, so we will check back when they do more updates.

t.imo.im – chat service through Twitter

t.imo.im really doesn’t show you much on their homepage about how the service works, features or functions.  This generally scares us.  Really scares us.  The main page simply asks you to do a few steps, with no indication of the outcome.

  1. Log in securely to Twitter (oAuth)
  2. Pick a follower or someone to chat with
  3. Direct message them to start chatting

Well how in the heck does it work?  Is this a slew of direct messages?  Does it count against my API?  I tried navigating to a help or about page, to no avail.  Well I went ahead and used our test account.

The interface prompted me instantly to send a tweet, or not, that I was using the service and available to chat.  The left side showed my status (normal chat stats with on, off busy and away), chat buddies and who I follow.  The right side was my Twitter stream, including mentions and DM’s.

I could hover over any name on the left, get their recent tweet and see if they were online in the service and click to see their Twitter profile.  Besides Reply and Retweet on the right timeline, a chat link was below each person also.  Offering me the ability to invite them to chat.  Once again I have to ask how much of your API this might use.

Interesting tool if you need a real chat service using your Twitter id’s and don’t want to share your other IM names or Skype.  This might have enough need if people know about it.

Joy.ly – add unicode characters to tweets

Joy.ly allows you to utilize their interface to send tweets with more unicode characters.  The person reading the tweet will get a link and come back to joy.ly to see it all, so that was a bummer.  A lot of it also rides on the fact that whatever client or machine the are using may not have all the fonts needed to enjoy the experience.  Windows is a prime example.  Mac will work great.

The choices are like the Lucky Charms of tweets.  Arrows, actions, symbols and stars.
