Great tools, apps, and services built around Twitter

TwtRoulette – view random Twitter accounts

Yes, you know where the name TwtRoulette came from.  You can view random Twitter accounts or even submit one yourself to be added to the pool.

I went ahead and clicked random and was presented with an ad at the top (not unexpected) and then a listing of Tweets as some random user would see them.  Much like watching the public timeline at any point.  No common theme, hashtag or list.  Just people.

I shortly got a prompt to add my own timeline to the roulette wheel.  However, even with the oAuth prompt, I did not like how it asked to read and update my timeline.  My stream is public and who I follow could be, so it should be able to just take my username and submit it, no oAuth necesary.  If they are protected then you can’t see it.

You get about ten or so tweets per page and have to click to see more.  You can also choose to see Twitter as someones timeline would be, which is interesting.

So this begs a serious question.  If I authorize oAuth to view the stream as I do and I see someone that has protected their tweets, can you then use this tool to see that person’s tweets?

Will this help me find someone new?  Not likely in the random sense.

TwitChange – buy a celebrity follower

This one has a short time span, but I see TwitChange having a long afterlife and other events.  The premise is you bid, for charity, to win your favorite celebrity to follow you.

The only global celebrity auction where Twitter users can bid to get three things: be followed by their favorite celebrity on Twitter, retweeted, or mentioned by them in a special tweet!

The list of celebrities is growing, all with variances in how they will handle you if you win.  Some will follow for a certain amount of time, throw a retweet of yours or just mention you.  Heck, you might even get lucky and make a friend along the way.

All proceeds from the TwitChange celebrity auction will provide aHomeInHaiti.org the means to finish rebuilding the Miriam Center.

So since this goes to charity, I would suggest you give it a shot and make a bid.  Even if you just want to donate to charity.

Twextra – when you just have too much to say

Twextra takes the 140 character limit in Twitter and throws it away to give you 100,000 characters.  They have embraced oAuth, which gets them in the game right away (read the article on how Twitter is killing the Ecosystem).

The editor is rich text, including pictures and video if needed.  Apparently you can update via a mobile browser without the rich text as well.  Translation of the messages is built in for readers all over the world.

One thing the site did not include is how it sends the messages out.  Does it use bit.ly? Multiple tweets?  I wish that was more clear, but they do have some good how-to videos.

If you need to say 100,000 words, I think a blog is for you.  Not Twitter.
