Great tools, apps, and services built around Twitter

ManageTwitter – clean up and matter who you follow

ManageTwitter is a tool to help you guage the effectiveness of those that you follow.  Utilizing oAuth, you log in allow the service to get some information such as the following:

  • who is following you back
  • what accounts are dormant or quiet
  • what accounts are talkative

It will automatically suggest a number of people you can unfollow (mine came in at 63) with some great options.  The first one I noticed is the choice to select allor unselect all.  But the ability to unselect only verified accounts, was a big bonus.  Then a following option allowed you to unselect popular accounts.

This means that the verified or popular are more than likely huge accounts that do not follow many back (read this as stars and geek gods/goddesses).

I went through the choices to first see the accounts that have not tweeted in 30 days, with some surprising results.  Hovering over any name shows total tweets, numbers of followed and followers and how long ago the account was created.

This has been the easiest and quickest follower management tool to adjust who you follow.  Heck it even told me the number of people that unfollowed me with the tool,  Thank goodness it was only 1 (yet I tweet often and am active.  I hope they didn’t do what I almost did and forget to uncheck someone)

Buzz2Twitter: Turn Google Buzz Into A Twitter Client

There’s a growing demand for Google Buzz and Twitter integration, despite the platforms being very similar to one another. Last week, you read about Tw2Buzz, a twitter tool that imports your Twitter contacts into Google Buzz. The fun doesn’t to stop there as another Google Buzz/Twitter tool makes its way across the web. Get ready to start syncing your Google Buzz account with Twitter too.

Buzz2Twitter is a Twitter tool that will sync your Google Buzz account to Twitter in real-time. It’s real-time capabilities can transform your Google Buzz account to your new Twitter client.  Think of this tool as a Ping.fm for Google Buzz, limited to Twitter. Simply sign-in with your Twitter account and grab your Google Reader Number ID. Buzz2Twitter will take it from there.

Hat tip and thanks to Sarah Perez at ReadWriteWeb for spotting this awesome tool.

JustUnfollow – pick to unfollow that that don’t follow you

JustUnfollow is a tool from Twi5 that allows you to pick and choose who to unfollow, based on those that don’t follow you back.  One thing they did right was to not make this a bulk tool.  Right now you only get 50 people listed, but I imagine that will increase soon.

If they can add in ways to sort by not only who isn’t following you back, but also who hasn’t tweeted in a certain timeframe.

Twitter Sentiment – track the good and bad on a word or phrase

Twitter Sentiment makes reading the pulse of the Twittersphere a breeze.  Enter any term or word, the default right now is NBC Olympics, and get graphs and recent tweets on the mood about that topic.  You will get a percentage pie chart, a number count and the words used.  Enter your own term and simply click  submit.

Below that a zoomable graph of the last week shows the trend with counts.  You can scroll back and forth in date ranges as well as zoom into a specific date and time range.

The bottom allows you to see tweets with the token words from the top, good and bad words on the topic, with a data range selector.  This is a great tool to use around an product launch and major event to get the feeling of the population.

Anyone trying to see the heartbeat of what they are talking about as a company or conference, this is a great starting point.

Tw2buzz – import Twitter contacts to Google Buzz

Tw2Buzz - import twitter contacts into Google Buzz

Tw2buzz pulls your contact list on Twitter right into Google Buzz to match them to Google accounts.  You can then decide if you want to follow them.  Happily it is not automatic as Google Buzz started and gives you the chance to choose.  Of course, they chose the proper path of using oAuth, so a good beginning.

It is currently in closed beta, but you can request an account on the webpage.  A bulk follow ability is in the works but the Google API does not have that ability yet.

Twedemption – remove all direct messages (fee service)

Twedemption is a paid service, at one time of $5.99 USD, to go in and remove all the direct messages from your inbox.

Now I have seen other apps from the company, so I was not as nervous about providing my username and password to Twitter as others might be.  But, for a first time user, there is no help on the main page, no contact information (just a blank form link) and nothing about how it works.

Also, you must have a lot of direct messages stored up in your inbox to need this service.  While the web interface to Twitter takes forever to click delete for each one, this is a full sweep move and might get rid of something you want to keep.  Just remember that.

Dynamic Tweets – schedule your tweets in advance

Dynamic Tweets offers a tweet deferral service like a few others we have reviewed.  It works well scheduling out tweets for reminders and marketing as the website shows.  Also, if you have something important to say in the middle of the night, when not many would see it in the great stream that is twitter, having it set to publish during normal hours just makes sense.

You do have to register for the service, but I wish they had implemented oAuth already.  This means you will create an account with them and then give your Twitter credentials over to them as well.  I always think the worst and I am not saying they would use it harmfully.

Now they do most of the end user service for free, with a fremium model for professional and corporate users.  The full chart can be found right here.  Such things as sending predefined tweets based on keywords is saved for money paying customers.  Multiple Twitter accounts are available to any level though.

Tweetz.TV – tv channels via linked YouTube tweets

Tweetz.TV creates a tv playlist from video links that are shared on Twitter.  Using oAuth, you log in to the service and are presented with a few choices:

  • A public channel showing all video links
  • My Tv which shows video links from those you follow
  • Search TV which allows you to look for particular products

Once logged in, the video viewer is on the left and you change between views on the right.  Quite an interesting and fast way to keep up to date on videos from the Twitter stream.

Currently they only support YouTube, but I didn’t want to mention that early on since they are trying to add Vimeo and DailyMotion at this time.

Buzzbird – the open source client

Buzzbird was primarily developed for and on Mac but is available for Windows and Linux.  It is not a complicated client with a streamlined interface and not too many features.

Multiple accounts, the number of unreads and other features are included up to this point.  Scrolling back it is almost a year old and each point release makes some huge leaps in fixes and enhancements.  A client to keep an eye on for sure.

TweetRadio – listen to the pulse of Twitter in audio !!

TweetRad.io is an interesting idea.  They grab the hottest topics, using text to speech technology, and make an audio stream from it.

Ok at first I was not so sure, but damn.  I clicked the tech channel and it started reading out tweets saying things like “Mashable says …. <tweet here>” removing the links.  Quite awesome as background noise full of information.

I really like this service for some reason!!  I then noticed I can type in any username strings in the search.  I did some friends and the radio starts like it is scanning stations.  Static, partial words, etc.  This is when the text to speech must be working.  Soon enough it was reading tweets from those people.

While there was a lag there, it was a great way to have it catch me up while I read other things.  Protected streams cannot be read of course and there is no authentication required to use the service.
