Great tools, apps, and services built around Twitter

Peekr – view Twitter backgrounds with ease!

Peekr is an awesome little tool.  How many times have you been on someones profile page on Twitter that they spent hours of time on and you can’t see it all?  Well with the bookmarklet of Peekr it hides the normal Twitter stuff showing only the background.  They have a sample on their page to give you the idea.

When you are done, simply click the unhide button that appeared or refresh the webpage itself!

Portwiture – your Twitter status in photos

portwiture logo

I ran across Portwiture and couldn’t help but think it could take off as an idea and service.  Thier site describes it as the following:

Portwiture grabs photography from Flickr that matches the content of your most recent Twitter updates. The result is a serendipitous visual representation of your Twitter profile.

I ran myself through as the victim for you to see what I would get back based on my recent tweets.  I got nothing!  I ran Wayne Sutton (fellow member of TheSocialGeeks podcast) and got quite the view!  You can view then as a grid or slideshow.  I only wish the tweet that brought the picture would be lnked somehow.

Twiew – share videos on Twitter

Twiew allows you to search by a keyword or URL and share videos back to your stream.  I tested some keywords and it brings up video results in-line and let’s you view or post them.  This service is much like Twitmatic.

You must provide your Twitter username and password when posting.

Twitlonger – make longer tweets

Twitlonger has a nice clean login screen that asks for your username and password to capture longer tweets from you that it sends as links into the stream.

To capture revenue they run Google ads at the bottom of each post that is linked back from your tweet, but no big deal unless you hate ads.  If you do, move along to any of the other tools we published today by seeing the tag “verbose

XLTweet – post extra long tweets

Right on the tails of Twerbose comes XLTweet to the catalog.  You provide your Twitter username and password and type in the extra long tweet.

XLTweet then uses Bit.ly to shrink it and marks the tweet as a favorite so you can find it later in your stream.

Do I always want to give out my username and password to a new site?  No, but this is from the makers of Twitwall which we reviewed before.

Twerbose – post longer tweets on Twitter

Twerbose tours itself as a site where you can be more verbose in your message by using their service to post longer tweets.  They have a feature list on their site:

* Post massive tweets easily
* Comment on other people’s massive tweets
* Optional advanced wysiwyg editing
* Add Youtube videos to your tweet
* Control tweet privacy
* iPhone friendly!

You must provide your Twitter username and password to use the service.  However! I did like their terms of service found here.  They will remove tweets and/or block your IP address for nudity, hatred, or just constant blatant product promotion.  The idea is to expand Twitter into more than a microblog service when you have more to say.

Splitweet – multi account Twitter management and brand watching

Splitweet is a new web based site, with Mac app (based on Fluid), to help manage multiple Twitter accounts.  While they state it is for companies, I know too many people trying to start up multiple Twitter account for various reasons.  Twhirl has been by local client of choice, even for multiple accounts.  But sometimes you need a web interface that has different features.

To sign up I simply entered an email address to be verified and my primary Twitter account name (no password).  I quickly verified and was in to a pretty clean interface.  Based on the initial username I entered, Splitweet started pulling replies to the tweets that included that name into the bottom right side of the window.

I easily went to accounts and added the proper password for the main one as well as some others to see how the interface worked with multiple  accounts on the screen.  All the tweets are blended into one stream with color coding next to them.  You are able to reply, direct, retweet and even favorite any of them you desire.  The site auto updates the stream also on a schedule, which you can stop at any time.

At the top you are also able to send tweets to whatever account you decide.  This is only a checkbox so make sure you are sending under the right one.  I do like Twhirl for that since I know which window I am in most of the time.

Then there is a section for Brands.  In this area you type in and save keywords that you want watched in the public stream.  After I saved a couple, I went back to the homepage and it immediately started filling in the branding section with mentions of the keywords.  This is a great way for users in companies to watch their company name or topic and respond.  You could reply, retweet and direct message (if they follow you of course) any of the branded mesages pulled.  I could then select which name to respond as also.

Overall a darn fine interface that companies should have users look at if they do not want to install local cleints.  This also allows mutliple people to be in one screen and see everything at the same time.
